In recent Irish media articles it was estimated that up to 50,000 people could depart from Irish shores by the end of 2011 in search of work abroad. Whilst a large percentage is made up of the skilled labour force and construction workers, it was highlighted that 1 in 5 recent Graduates have left and others will follow suit. Graduates are the next generation and need to be given a role in rebuilding Ireland. Mathematical and Finance Graduates in particular are important to the future of Ireland as they play a pivotal role in reshaping our economy.
Over the last few months the Banking and Finance team at Careers Register have experienced a steady increase in the number of graduate opportunities on the market, an average increase of 15% since 2009. Fund Administration firms in particular have approached colleges and universities directly and have sought out the best talent in advance of their studies being completed. As a result these firms have recruited an average of 30 finance and maths graduates in the last 6 months. We’ve recently placed another 15 business and finance graduates with one of the large indigenous banks in the last three months specialised within quantitative disciplines.
The financial services industry has shown there is also a demand for strong mathematical or statistical type Graduates at Masters and PHD level, with most employers seeking a minimum of a 2.2 or higher on final results. There is a continued demand across the finance sector for the following areas - financial modelling, risk and control, financial analysis and data analysis.
Future graduates in the midst of embarking on their chosen disciplines and subjects of choice for university need to take a very strategic and methodical approach to their decisions, choose areas of study like IT, Science, Engineering and Finance with a Quantitative discipline, that are and will be in high demand for decades to come.
