Multinational corporations continue to lead the way in recruitment, one of the consistently “hard to find” candidate categories is experienced EMEA Payroll Managers and Administrators. There have been a number of new positions created in this space in recent months and candidates with experience ranging from 1-5 years in processing payrolls across multiple countries are at a premium.

The need for Accountants with US GAAP experience certainly waned throughout 2009 & 2010. There has, however, been a renewed demand in this area over the past 6 months. Although a significant number of Shared Service Centres in Dublin have migrated their transactional processing roles to more cost efficient locations such as Central Europe and Mumbai/Bangalore in India, most have actually retained the Qualified Accountant positions here. These would fall mainly into the areas of General Ledger and Statutory Accounting/ Reporting.

There has also been a significant increase in requirements for Commercial Accountants of late. With a current emphasis on budgeting, forecasting and cost analysis across all organisations to ensure that all commercial spend is accounted for, clients are increasingly looking for qualified accountants with solid Financial Planning & Analysis experience. The preference is not only for candidates with the expertise to analyse the figures, but for those who also possess strong interpersonal skills to communicate the key financial information to non-finance stakeholders.

After a number of years of significant downturn, employment within the SME market is finally showing some signs of recovery. While not at the same rate as hiring within the multinational space, the number of opportunities for accounting and finance professionals in this area is definitely on the increase. Roles that we have seen coming through include Financial & Management Accountant, Accounts Assistant, Payroll Manager/Assistant and Finance Manager. There are also more opportunities for finance & accountancy graduates who wish to pursue a Trainee Accountant contract in practice.  This may come as a surprise, but most notably we have recently recruited a number of finance accounts positions for a number of property management companies. This is very positive given how seriously this sector was affected during the height of the recession.

It has been well publicised that salaries were greatly reduced during 2009 & 2010, but it is now fair to say that salaries are levelling off and we are seeing fewer discrepancies from one company to the next.

Overall there have been a number of very promising changes in the market. Domestic companies have started to recruit again, which hints at an underlying confidence in the markets that is allowing growth projects and initiatives, which may have been on hold for some time, to be implemented. In addition, we are starting to see more positions being taken up by people already in permanent employment. This suggests that the employee perception is also changing and there is a feeling of security returning to the employment market as well.X While the weather is not living up to our expectations this summer, career opportunities for Accountancy professionals are greatly exceeding them!
