News and Updates

Hoodie-wearing Mark Zuckerberg upset Wall Street Bankers recently by turning up at high powered investor meeting wearing inappropriate casual clothing. Investors shocked reaction has sparked a national debate. Today FM’s Last Word with Matt Cooper contacted our very own Lisa Holt and Eamonn Leonard of Engine Yard (Silicon Valley Millionaire) for their expert opinion.

The discussion only emphasised the culture differences between the Financial and High Tech sector’s sparking debate as to whether Zuckerberg was making a statement to the corporate finance sector.

Key points from the discussion:

Lisa believed a compromise would not have gone astray and a suit would not have made Zuckerberg stumble. If he was to go on a date would he wear a hoody?

While Leonard (who hasn’t shaved in three years) believed that that Investors should have been trying to impress Zuckerberg, perhaps they should have taken a more casual approach with Zuckerberg as it is his brains and not his clothing that matters.

Possibly we need to take a leaf out of Zuckerbergs book to not care about appearance and believe in our abilities, it could be worth millions.

The Last Word: Would Zuckerberg wear a Hoodie on a date? You decide.

NRF’s Annual ConferenceThe Way Forward” was held in City West Hotel on Thurs 10th May, Paul McClatchie and various members of Cpl Group were in attendance.  Recruitment Industry professionals attend this conference to learn about the latest global recruitment trends, new legislation and leave equipped with knowledge of business enhancing skills.

Paul has outlined below key points and useful tips that he took away from the event:

One of the most interesting speakers was Kevin Greene, CEO of Rec UK (equivalent to NRF on a larger scale) he offered an energetic overview of the current market and concluded with the following advice on what to focus on:

  • -          Be ahead of your clients in Social Media. We need to know more than they do.

    -          Your core area of focus should be 'an inch wide and a mile deep'.

  • -         You should have a really good network of candidates in one area.

  • -          It doesn’t mean you need to spend 24/7 recruiting in this space, but your
clients need to know you’re the key industry ‘go to’ Recruiter.

  • -          Understand your value and display & articulate in a transparent manner.

    -          Be commercial – walk away from clients that won’t pay the right rates or work
the right way. There are better companies out there.

    -          Have great trade associations to boost your pitch.

Frank Durrell of TMP Worldwide touched upon your email marketing approach. This is a useful overview that we’ll do a session on:
-          Understand | Attract | Engage | Activate | Nurture

-          Measure each stage.

Brian MacNeice of Genesis Consulting suggested we should be crystal clear on the one or two things that matter most in our business and cited Ryanair and Google as examples of companies who excel. He also mentioned that the higher the standards in the team, the less we compromise the quality of our service and approach.

Cpl were delighted to announce that we launched our second annual National Jobseekers Roadshow  last week 23rd of April – 30th April in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Sligo, Mullingar and Limerick .  Over the week  1100 jobseekers attended the roadshows across the country and we still have today to go.  The response from jobseekers has been incredibly positive and it is great to see them taking control of their job search and looking for any advice they can get to help them secure a job. The roadshow concentrated on all those things in a jobseekers control  for example, CV preparation, Interviewing, Personal brand and Networking for jobs.

“We are trying to give jobseekers some positivity, remember there are 1.7 million people in employment so jobseekers should remain optimistic. If they are well prepared and persistent they have every chance of getting a job” says Peter Cosgrove.

We have had two very successful and exciting months with a really strong sense of an improved market. There has been a particularly noticeable demand in both temporary and permanent assignments for qualified Accountants.  Internal Audit and in-house Tax roles  in particular. It is very encouraging to see the number of smaller accountancy firms back hiring  this is a definite sign of green shoots.

In our Legal division the growing demand is for Solicitors with 2-3 year PQE - especially those in specialised areas such as Healthcare, Funds, Banking, Financial Services and Corporate Insurance. Whilst all areas in the team are showing growth there is definitely a continued persistence from our client base that only the best candidates who are willing to work exceptionally hard will survive in a new role.

A client quoted to us today “one mistake is acceptable but the same mistake a second time around is not”. Clients are looking for skillset, experience and personality. Attitude is key. Managing relationships in the work place is more important than ever and the ability to develop strong relationships and of course to manage conflict is of paramount importance.  It is still very tough out there and only the best and most resilient candidates will find jobs.    There is no doubt in our minds that we are in a much healthier times and we must do our utmost to guide our candidates and clients in the best way possible.

Another interesting indication that we are finally coming out of challenging times is that areas such as Sales and Marketing, Office Support and Customer Support are experiencing an increased demand in vacancies. Again the underlying trend being only the best candidate will do. So more than ever preparation is key for every person seeking a new job.  All the signs bode well for us to continue 2012 in a positive frame of mind!

Cpl is delighted to announce that the National Jobseekers Roadshow was launched today by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD. Mr. Bruton highlighted that he was ‘delighted to welcome this Roadshow which will make a valuable contribution towards improving the prospects of unemployed people around the country’.

National Jobseekers Roadshow - Cpl - 23-30 Apr 2012The National Jobseekers Roadshow is an initiative designed to assist the thousands of jobseekers throughout Ireland. This is a free event visiting Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Sligo, Mullingar and Limerick which is running from the 23rd-30th April 2012. At this event we aim to provide our guests with the skills and knowledge needed to improve their job search and ultimately make themselves more employable.

This is a tumultuous time for our country and with unemployment at over 14%, we feel that there are quite a few areas where Jobseekers could improve their search. To give an example, over the course of the last year, Cpl has interviewed over 9,000 candidates and reviewed over 70,000 CVs. The worrying thing is that 89% of these CVs contained basic errors and while you can’t get a job based solely on your CV, you can certainly lose one.

We encourage those who are currently looking for employment to come and visit us at the Cpl National Jobseekers Roadshow this month and avail of our free, expert advice to improve their job search and enhance their chances of employment. To register for the event please see www.cpl.ie/jobseekersroadshow

If you are qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, ACCA or CPA in the months ahead you will be glad to hear there are strong opportunities across each of the areas below:

Insurance and Financial Services:

Financial Accountant / Financial Reporting Accountant – Insurance and Reinsurance – Domestic and International markets. This has been a busy area for us in 2011 where we have filled at least one financial accountant for Insurance on a monthly basis. Some months were exceptionally busy and we filled  up to 3 per financial accountant roles per month.

Risk Consultant – Insurance

Candidates coming from a either an Advisory or Audit background with strong exposure to Insurance or FS often have the required skills for roles in Risk.  We placed on average one candidate every 2 months into these roles across 2011.

Compliance Consultant – Insurance

Candidates coming from the regulatory function of practice have a very clearly defined path into Compliance. 2011 also saw us placing candidates with an Audit background into Compliance roles with Insurance and FS Clients. Numbers placed averaged out at about

Business Partner | Commercial Accountants | Management Accountants – Financial Planning & Analysis – Insurance & Banking

For candidates whose experience has been a little more commercial we have managed to fill vacancies in the above areas. Financial modelling and analysis has generally formed part of their experience and they have a natural leaning to more commercial aspects of the business such as pricing and contracts. Excellent communication skills are essential for these roles.

Private Practice, Audit & Internal Audit:

Big 4 / Top 10

There is a strong demand across all the Top 10 firms at the moment in a variety of areas including Audit, Tax, Corporate Recovery, Financial Services Advisory and Business Risk Services / Internal Audit.

As a result there is a constant interest in candidates from medium sized firms with strong track records and ambitions within practice.

Internal Audit

In more prosperous times Internal Audit prospects always came second to the more mainstream Financial Accounting, Reporting and Controller roles. However with the renewed spotlight on controls and governance in Ireland and abroad Internal Audit roles have a far higher profile in our Multinationals and the area is now a chosen career path for many moving out of the larger practices upon qualification.

Industry sector:

On qualification a large number of accountants target industry roles in well established medium to large organisations or multinationals. While there are a lot of opportunities in these organisations, the recruitment process for these roles can be extremely competitive. Clients can afford to be choosy when hiring and often have high expectations of candidates.

Current key requirements include previous exposure to US GAAP and IFRS. On the technical side accountants with ERP systems experience such as Oracle, SAP and JD Edwards are also in demand. Commercial Accounting continues to be an area of high demand with multinationals and indigenous organisations alike. As companies continue to strive to operate at optimum levels, experience in cost/pricing/revenue analysis and budgeting/forecasting is extremely desirable.

I attended a Breakfast Briefing hosted by William Fry Solicitors this morning and it was well worth the early start. The topic focused on Social Networking and outlined the very real and practical legal implications that affect every employer. There has been an explosion of activity in recent years with most employees actively signed up to 1 or more social media.

Peter Cosgrove and Paul McClatchie provided a 20 minute talk on Effective Networking before hosting a speed networking event that was well attended and in good spirits.  Very well organised by Laura Coughlan of the ACCA and hosted by the Head of ACCA Ireland Liz Hughes.

Liz introduced Tony Osude first who provided a really strong overview of how the market is likely to look in the next 5 years while outlining that an increasing number of Accountants will be employed in SSCs and Outsourced operations.

Kalavacherla Prabhakar (abbreviated to PK) offered an enlightening interactive session on the development of Revenue Recognition and described how this will evolve over the coming years to eventually replace US GAAP. There was much debate and it appears it will take a while for everyone to catch on!

Julie Spillane providing an inspiring reflection of her career to date. Julie is the EMEA Director of Accenture and some of the key points that stuck out included her focus around ensuring your track record and standard are high. Julie recommened the audience looks 5 years ahead at all stages with a view to developing skills. She outlined the importance of an excellent network, having strong mentors in your career and ensuring you regularly step outside of your comfort zone.

Peter Cosgrove’s talk hopefully offered comfort to those who find networking to be a tough and explained how to get the most out of networking with a view to building your career, developing contacts and having readily available advice on all matters through growing your contacts.
